National Zoological Collection of Suriname/ Environmental Research Center (CMO)





The vertebrate collections are divided in the Amphibian/Reptile collection, the Fish collection, The Mammals collection and the Bird collection. Incorporated in these collections are the Haverschmidt bird collections.



The vertebrate division of the NZCS consists of the following material:


-    Alcohol and formalin vertebrates collection

-    Dried skins and stuffed animals

-    Skulls and skeleton collection

-    Artifact collection (bird nests, etc.)


Incorporated collections:

-Haverschmidt Bird collection

-Vari Corantijn River Fish collection

-Carnegie Bat collection


Estimated holdings of specimens:

-7000 fishes

-1000 amphibians

-600 reptiles

-530 birds

-240 mammals

-100skeletons and skulls
