National Zoological Collection of Suriname

INVERTEBRATES

The invertebrate collections are divided in alcohol and formalin preserved invertebrates, dry-pinned invertebrates, mainly terrestrial insects, and a  dry shell collection. Incorporated in these collections are the Van Regtenen Altena Mollusk collection and an Agricultural Pest Insect collection.

The estimated number of specimen holdings, preserved in different levels of curation, is

-    250.000 terrestrial invertebrates

-    100.000 miscellaneous insects

-    25.000 land arthropods

-    3500 aquatic invertebrates

Recent activities include the collecting of invertebrates at the Tafelberg. The execution of a flora and fauna research  expedition to this area was funded by the Suriname Conservation Foundation (SCF). A second expedition will take place later in the year 2004. For more information see also Expeditions.

The Invertebrate division has also been very busy with a project funded by the ALCOA Foundation which goal was to increase the awareness under the Surinamese population with regard to Chagas Disease and its insect vector.
